Direction establishes where we are going. Curiosity leaves room for what we discover along the way.
I’m a filmmaker. I write, direct, edit, color, and compose, and I’ve been lucky enough to work on films that took me places I couldn’t have planned. That is the part I love: the version of the film that exists before we start is never the one we finish, and the difference is almost always a gift from someone else on the crew.
I believe a director holds the vision clearly enough that talented collaborators can add discoveries to it. The film gets better in other people’s hands. My job is to keep it pointed in the right direction while leaving room for the film to surprise us.
When I’m not on set or in the edit, I’m usually studying something: color science, sound design, lens behavior, the rhythm of a good dialogue scene. I keep notes on all of it.
